The United States has secretly shipped long-range missiles to Ukraine in recent weeks for use against Russian invaders, and Ukraine has used the missiles twice so far, a U.S. official said on Wednesday. The missiles are included in a $300 million military aid package for Ukraine approved by President Joe Biden on March 12, the U.S. official said on condition of anonymity. The official did not say how many missiles were fired. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed at a briefing with reporters that a “significant number” of missiles had been shipped to Ukraine and said “we will be sending more.” He said Ukraine was committed to using the weapons only on Ukrainian soil, not in Russia. Sullivan said some of the missiles are included in a $1 billion Ukrainian weapons program approved by President Joe Biden on Wednesday. The Pentagon initially opposed the deployment of long-range missiles, fearing that the loss of missiles from the U.S. stockpile would harm U.S. military readiness. There are also concerns that Ukraine could use them to attack targets in Russia.
