The idea of the work
An investigation found that more than 1,000 people have died in the past 10 years after police subdued them through physical detention, stun guns, physical beatings and other non-fatal means. There have been hundreds of cases where police officers were not trained or did not follow the force’s best safety practices, resulting in deaths. Law enforcement caused or contributed to about half of the deaths. In many other cases, heavy police presence was not mentioned and instead blamed on drugs or pre-existing health problems. The death toll has fallen disproportionately on black Americans. They account for a third of the deaths. Others hit are those compromised by medical, mental health or drug emergencies, a group particularly vulnerable to violence, even minor ones. In the decade between 2012 and 2021, at least 1,036 people died after police used so-called “non-lethal force”, an average of twice a week.
