Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said Wednesday that Japan has lodged a strong protest against “extremely inappropriate” remarks made by Chinese Ambassador Wu Jianghao on Taiwan.
A record-breaking delegation of 31 cross-party Japanese lawmakers attended the inauguration of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and Vice President Hsiao Mi-chin on May 20. Lin also publicly congratulated Lai on his inauguration, saying that “Taiwan is a partner and friend that shares fundamental values, has close economic ties, and has important people-to-people exchanges.”
In response, the Chinese Embassy in Japan lodged “solemn representations” and issued a statement accusing Japan of “grossly interfering in China’s internal affairs” and violating the One-China principle. On the same day, the Chinese Embassy also held a symposium and prompted overseas Chinese groups in Japan to issue a “statement promoting reunification.”
