On the 30th, US President Trump announced that he would impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods, effective August 1st, and implement additional punitive measures.
Trump stated on social media that while the US and India are partners, trade between the two countries has been relatively low for years “because India’s tariffs are simply too high, and it has also instituted some of the most stringent and offensive non-monetary trade barriers in the world.”
Trump did not provide specific details of the “additional punitive measures” against India. He later added in a post, “The United States has a massive trade deficit with India.”
