On May 12, local time, US President Trump held a press conference at the White House to comment on the negotiations between the United States and China on trade issues. During his speech, he suddenly proposed that the results of the negotiations would be conducive to “unification and peace”, which led to speculation that the negotiations might involve Taiwan issues, causing great concern on the island. In response, a spokesperson for the office of Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te urgently stated that the Taiwan authorities are currently not aware of the content of the negotiations involving Taiwan-related issues.
